Alongside her role as the NZSO's Principal Flute, Bridget Douglas also has the job of chairing the Alex Lindsay Awards Trust that is helping to bring through New Zealand's next generation of orchestral musicians.
The annual awards (which include the Giese Flute Grant and Michael Monaghan Award) go to young musicians pursuing an orchestral career and honour the legacy of three of the country's finest classical instrumentalists: violinist and former NZSO Concertmaster Alex Lindsay, flute player Richard Giese and violinist Michael Monaghan.
Bridget Douglas, herself a previous Alex Lindsay Award recipient, spoke to Bryan Crump about the awards, the musicians who made them possible, and the 2023 recipients, most of whom will continue their studies overseas.
