A complete reworking of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Jekyll & Hyde opens tonight at Auckland’s Basement Theatre. It has a uniquely kiwi twist – Mr Hyde is so evil that he punches the cleaning lady, drop-kicks a precious kererū and yells ‘shark’ at the beach. Director Leo Gene Peters explains why it’s important to bring a kiwi flavour to a famous story.
