The ARD International Music Competition is the largest such competition in Germany.
It’s highly prestigious – past winners have included Jessye Norman, Maurice André, Mitsuko Uchida, and Christoph Eschenbach. But up until last year, not a single New Zealander had won a prize in the Competition’s 66-year history.
That changed when Thomas Hutchinson became a joint winner in the oboe section of the competition in September.
Ahead of a concert in Auckland tomorrow night, Thomas talks to Upbeat about his competition journey.
