A 128 year old violin was part of actor Russell Crowe’s divorce auction over the weekend. He learned to play it under the tutelage of Richard Tognetti for the film Master and Commander. It sold for $143,000 NZD, and was played on stage at the auction by Bridget O’Donnell from the Australian Youth Orchestra.

1pm Trevor Reekie meets Rodrigo y Gabriella

Trevor Reekie has the ability to get on side with some of the world’s most private musicians. In this interview he chats with Rodrigo and Gabriella, a Mexican classical guitar duo making a big name for themselves on the world stage. They’ve contributed to Hans Zimmer soundtracks and performed for Barack Obama. They were a highlight at Womad 2018.

The Yamaha often plays second fiddle to big names like Steinway, but in today’s feature recording, Glenn Gould proves why a Yamaha shouldn’t be underestimated.  He performs Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which he famously recorded in the 1950s and then rerecorded in the 80s, in what is seen as the “bookends” of his career.
