That’s the background to composer and jazz musician Lucien Johnson’s newly completed PhD on Ethio-jazz, which mixes western funk and soul with traditional Ethiopian music. Lucien tells Nick Tipping about the inspiration behind his studies and the implications of playing the music of a different culture.
