James Morrison – a Celebration of Ella and Louis by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra this week celebrates the famous collaboration of jazz legends Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Virtuoso trumpeter James Morrison – himself something of a legend - returns to Auckland along with fellow Australian vocalist Emma Pask to help recreate some of Ella and Louis' legendary jazz recordings this Thursday.
This is the first time in several years Morrison tells Eva Radich that he and Emma Pask have played together. They have performed the music of Louis and Ella before, with the BBC in London he says, but to be both together with the APO is a treat.
Morrison says Louis Armstrong was a formative influence on him as a young trumpeter and in creating this tribute show he has attempted to stay true to the spontaneous spirit so characteristic of the Ella and Louis recordings.
