Auckland-born pianist Tony Yan Tong Chen was the winner of the 2019 Wallace National Piano Competition (you can hear his winning performance here). Tony's currently a student at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in New York, studying piano with Professor Alan Chow, although he's been doing this long-distance from New Zealand during the pandemic.
Tony's giving a recital at St Andrew's on the Terrace, Wellington, on Sunday 6 September and he spoke to Nick Tipping about life at Eastman, growing up as a multi-instrumentalist, and his future plans.
