Six performers from the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra led by concertmaster Andrew Beer, and also featuring pianist Sarah Watkins, are about to go on a nationwide tour for Chamber Music New Zealand.
The programme is titled 'Tales of the ‘20s' and brings to mind the Roaring '20s, flappers and the Jazz Age.
The concert includes a new piece written for the tour by Auckland composer and bassoonist Ben Hoadley who was inspired to write Cave Dances by stories of the decadent dance parties that used to be held in caves on Auckland's wild west coast during the 1920s. The work features clarinetist Jonathan Cohen.
Andrew and Sarah discuss the innovative music of that wild and carefree time with David Morriss, while composer Ben Hoadley talks about the similarity between modern day raves with the dance culture of the '20s.
