The Covid pandemic and border restrictions have had a large impact on music with an international connection. The Michael Hill International Violin Competition has been no exception: the 2021 contest – which would have marked the event’s 20th anniversary – is no longer taking place.
But things on the Michael Hill front have certainly not remained static. Just recently, the inaugural Wakatipu Music Festival took place, and now two competitions for young New Zealand musicians are joining forces: the Lewis Eady National Piano Competition, and the National String Competition.
Anne Rodda, Executive Director of the Hill Family Foundation for Art and Music (formerly the Michael Hill International Violin Competition), talked with Upbeat about this special combined music competition coming up in September.
