Umalali - the Garifuna Women's Project
The Garifuna people are a Central American ethnic group living mainly along the Caribbean Coast in Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras. Until recently, the only readily available recorded music from these communities was that performed by men. Umalali features the voices of The Garifuna Women's Project and is the product of ten years' field research by Belizean musician Ivan Duran. The women sing about their lives: the joy of a newborn child, looking for a job, the heartbreak of losing a loved one (Stonetree Records CMB-CD-6)
