    Seprewa Kasa (Ghana)

The seprewa is a harp-lute from Ghana, similar to the Malian kora. It was a popular instrument among the Akan people of west Ghana and the Ivory Coast, played at weddings, funerals, as courtly entertainment and, at the beginning of the 20th century, in the highlife dance bands of palm wine bars. The seprewa was gradually superseded by the guitar, and became almost forgotten even in Ghana.

The impetus for Seprewa Kasa came from Ghanaian guitarist Kari Banaman after he met seprewa player Osei Korankye in 2002 at a music festival in Switzerland. Together with a second seprewa player, Baffour Kyerematen, they composed the songs for this album (Riverboat Records TUGCD 1051)
