Staff Benda Bilili is a group of Congolese street musicians who live around the grounds of the zoo in Kinshasa. The four senior members of the band were victims of polio as children, and now get around on ingeniously customised tricycles. They're backed by a younger group of musicians, all former street kids who were taken in by the older band members. The music has elements of rumba, rhythm and blues, and reggae mixed together. 'Benda Bilili' means 'look beyond appearances': as one of the group's songs says, the only real handicaps are not in the body, but in the mind (Crammed Discs CRAW 51)
