  • 7:00 PM. Appointment

    Mahler's Last Year

When Gustav Mahler died on 18 May 1911, his music remained misunderstood except by a small circle of devotees. "My day will come" he had written to his wife in 1902, comparing the reception of his music to that of his contemporary Richard Strauss. For almost 50 years it was largely ignored, however today the world listens to Mahler's music

To commemorate the centenary of his death Peter Shaw presents two programmes about the composer's final year. It saw the triumphant première of his Eighth Symphony in Munich, the near collapse of his marriage, a fraught period as conductor of the New York Philharmonic and a prolonged struggle with the illness that forced his early retirement and brought him back to Vienna to die at the age of 50 (1) (RNZ)
