After Beethoven's Quintet for piano and winds, written soon after his arrival in Vienna, François-Xavier Roth directs Pierre Boulez's breakthrough piece, Le marteau sans maître ('The Hammer without a Master'), arguably the single most influential composition of the 1950s. By interlocking settings of three poems by the Surrealist poet René Char with commentaries from specific sub-groups of its ensemble, Boulez established a new kind of rapport between text and music through unsuspected continuities of timbre, a labyrinth of exotic sound at once tightly organised and delirious.

A British first half pairs Elgar's concert overture, inspired by a winter holiday on the Italian Riviera, with the Piano Concerto by Hugh Wood (80 this year), which sees him tapping into the live-wire personality of tonight's soloist, for whom it was written.

The all-French second half reflects new light on Debussy's masterly orchestral seascape with two pinnacles of water-inspired piano music, transformed for the symphony orchestra.

Messiaen's ecstatic, Eastern-influenced celebration of love is framed by a BBC commission from one of America's rising talents and Anna Meredith's acclaimed tour de force of clapping, stamping, singing and body percussion, first performed earlier this year by NYO members and commissioned for the PRS for Music Foundation's New Music 20x12 programme as part of the Cultural Olympiad. Varèse's Tuning Up is a tongue-in-cheek parody based on the familiar orchestral strains usually heard on stage only before the conductor arrives.

In association with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, the Royal College of Music, along with the conservatoires of Paris and Orsay, has been involved in a special project to recreate the distinctive sound of the world's first professional orchestra, founded by Louis XIII in 1626. Few of the original instruments have survived but specialist reconstructions allow us to savour the unique texture and rich inner voices as they might have been heard at the French court over 300 years ago.

Presented by Ken Taylor and John Perry of Stanford University

Six programmes

(4) Karl Popper (1902-1994)

Karl Popper is a landmark figure in the philosophy of science, who spent part of his life in New Zealand. His notion of "falsifiability" endures to this day and even appears in arguments about creation versus evolution. But what does it mean for a theory to be falsifiable? And where does the idea stand in contemporary philosophy of science? John and Ken test a few ideas on Popper and falsifiability with Denis Phillips from Stanford University (Ben Manilla Productions)

40 programmes from the world's greatest classical music festival

(12) BBC Scottish SO/Donald Runnicles

In their first appearance this season, Donald Runnicles and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra present two works by composers for whom he has a particular affinity. Wagner's gift to his wife, Cosima, is presented in its pared down original orchestration, much as she would have heard it that Christmas morning in 1870. The Royal Albert Hall is an ideal venue for Bruckner's symphonic revelations. The Eighth Symphony, arguably the greatest of them all, remains a huge and glorious challenge.
