(2) Conflict and Revolution

Do you go to the ballet? When was the last time you punched someone in the audience? On 29th May 1913 at the Champs-Elysées Theatre in Paris, quite a few of the patrons roughed each other up. The occasion was the première of The Rite of Spring. In those days they took music - and dance - more seriously than they do today. But a few months later, after a repeat performance of the music alone, the composer, Igor Stravinsky, was chaired out of the theatre on the audience's shoulders. How very French! And how very 20th century! Music by Igor Stravinsky, Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, Jean Sibelius, Claude Debussy, Irving Berlin and Scott Joplin (ABC Classic FM)
