Commonwealth Secretary General says Fiji must develop a democratic system approved by all citizens

The Commonwealth Secretary-General says that Fiji's Prime Minister must implement a democratic system accepted by all citizens in the country and not a few.

Don McKinnon says that Laisenia Qarase must canvass all Fiji citizens in order to determine what they want in the development of a democratic system for the country.

Earlier, Mr Qarase said indigenous Fijians preferred ethnic voting under which they can choose candidates from their own community or province.

He said this type of communal democracy will strengthen the role of traditional chiefs who have been reduced to political irrelevance by Western style democracy.

Mr Qarase has also said that leaving the running of the country to indigenous Fijians with the acceptance of Indo-Fijians will close the racial gap between the two races.

Mr McKinnon says the type of democratic system should be one that is accepted by all citizens and fair to all people.

"Do the people want it should be the first answer, would the people find that form of democracy, that model of democracy acceptable. The definition of democracy, as much as anything here in the pacific, which all tend to agree with is, are the people satisfied those who represent them truly do represent them ."
