The French Minister in Charge of Overseas Territories says she wants to see lower costs of all forms of communication to help their economic development.

Brigitte Girardin says an inter-Ministerial meeting will be held in two weeks to draft proposals which will be submitted to the Prime Minister.

This report fromm Walter Zweifel in Noumea.

"She says this ties in with her policy of maintaining what she calls territorial continuity and economic equality between the French mainland and it's overseas possessions. Speaking via a video link to an audience in Noumea she said she would set up a fund to help young people have lower costs for both air and sea travel to ensure that living in French overseas territories is no longer a handicap for economic development. While professing to work for lower intenet costs she was unable to say how she can achieve this in New Caledonia where the French state has ceded some of its powers to the local authorities."
