The French minister in charge of overseas territories, Brigitte Girardin, has warned the Socialists not to rejoice too soon over the gains of the pro-independence groups in French Polynesia's election.
The Socialists had signed a co-operation deal with the Tavini Huiraatira party before the election which saw it make gains in the biggest electorate and depriving the ruling Tahoeraa Huiraatira of its overall majority.
But Mrs Girardin has told a Socialist member during a debate in parliament that the electoral process is far from over.
The new 57-member parliament in Papeete is to choose a new assembly speaker next week and a new president in two weeks.
Mrs Girardin has accused the Socialists of pursuing a policy of dismembering the republic wanting to abandon the overseas territories and getting rid of the 2.5 million French outside the country.
