Tuvalu opposition waits for PM nomination deadline

8:37 am on 27 August 2004

The opposition in Tuvalu says it should find out this afternoon when the date for the nomination of Prime Minister closes.

Saufatu Sopoaga lost a vote of no confidence on Wednesday by eight votes to six, after a government member crossed the floor, and another government member was in New Zealand seeking medical attention.

The opposition MP Amasoni Kilei says the vote of no confidence was brought because Mr Sopoaga was abusing his position.

"Minister misuse of government property and that includes misuse of money and travelling overseas, going to Beijing without the endorsement of the cabinet and of course his own conduct over the past two years now."

The new government is expected to be formed within the next two weeks.
