Cook Islands election petition period ends

1:39 pm on 23 September 2004

Political parties in the Cook Islands have had until today to file legal claims against results in the general election.

The Cook Islands News reports 11 petitions have been filed with the High Court, putting back the first sitting of Parliament and the creation of a new government.

The Cook Islands Party is trying to overturn results in several constituencies, and the leader of the Tumua Enua faction, Norman George, is also contesting the outcome of a count on the island of Atiu.

The Cook Islands News says it understands the Democratic Party will lodge counter-petitions to match every case brought by the Cook Islands Party.

The deputy chief electoral officer is to meet lawyers tomorrow.
