The US Geological Survey says smog from Anatahan Volcano in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands has reached as far as the Philippines and Palau.

The news agency, Associated Press, reports the latest activity from the Anatahan began on May 18th and peaked two days later.

Satellite pictures from a military weather agency show a moderately thick plume of ash and steam from the volcano, extending about 644 kilometres to the west.

The pictures show thin ash and volcanic smog for another 1,046 kilometres north and west of the volcano.
