The Fiji government has given its second pay TV licence to Western Broadcasting Limited, a company which is wholly owned by the Ba Provincial Council.
The information minister, Marieta Rigamoto, says being a local company with substantial indigenous shareholding, the decision to grant the licence is in line with the government's affirmative action plan.
Western Broadcasting is in partnership with Australia's Pacific Broadcasting Services which will provide a multi-channel, direct to home satellite based Pay TV service.
It will be in competition with Fiji Television Limited's Pay TV service which has so far enjoyed a monopoly over the entire Fiji market.
