A former Fiji deputy prime minister, Dr Tupeni Baba, says the only way forward for the country is under the leadership of the ruling SDL Party.
Dr Baba was a senior minister of the Labour Party at the time of the 2000 coup but failed to win a seat when he contested the 2001 election as leader of his New Labour Party.
The Fiji Times reports that Dr Baba is now standing as an SDL candidate in the May election after reportedly being approached by several parties.
He says the SDL party had done well in turning the economy around in difficult times and while some of the government's legislation may be controversial, it is an attempt to move the country forward.
