Two top Fiji officers linked to mutiny plot resign

Two senior Fiji army officers who were allegedly involved in the planned overthrow of the commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, earlier this year have been forced to resign from the military.

Radio Fiji reports that both Lt Col Saimone Vatu and Lt Col Solomone Raravula have handed in their resignations.

It is alleged that in mid-January the two officers and the then Land Force Commander, Lt Col Jone Baledrokadroka, conspired to overthrow Commodore Bainimarama.

Baledrokadroka will face a court martial.

Commodore Bainimarama says since Vatu and Raravula have resigned they will not be court martialled.

Following a complaint by the military, the Public Service Commission has also ordered an investigation into the chief executive of the home affairs ministry, Dr Lesi Korovavala, for his alleged involvement in the conspiracy.
