Two major world organisations have joined together to help the Papua New Guinea autonomous province of Bougainville in the fight against malaria.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that Rotary Against Malaria and UNICEF have provided 8,000 mosquito nets for use in the province.

The paper says malaria is still one of the major killer diseases in the region with up to 20,000 people, mostly mothers and children, in need of the protective nets.

It quotes Rotary's chairman, Ron Seddon, as saying the nets are the new Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets that can still kill mosquitoes after going through the wash 21 times.

Mr Seddon says if people wash their nets every three months, they should last for five years.

Over the last three months, a malaria outbreak in Western Highlands Province has claimed more than 50 lives.
