Striking doctors in Tahiti to meet government on their claims

2:31 pm on 19 November 2007

An advisor to the French Polynesian government says the government will be meeting a delegation from the 140 physicians who have gone on strike tomorrow.

The strike, which was launched last week, has virtually shut down hospitals except for emergencies.

The striking doctors claim that the growing needs of the people in the territory require higher budget allocations.

But Dr Jean-Paul Theron, who is a Public Health Adviser to the government, disagrees.

"The strike of doctors is not about the health policy. What they demand is just to have more on their salary. They have to be honest about that."
