American Samoa's paramount chief, A.U. Fuimaono, who was the territory's first elected Delegate-at-Large to the U.S., Congress, died earlier this week at the LBJ hospital.
He was 85.
The cause of death is unknown but Fuimaono has been unable to attend public functions recently because of poor health.
At the time of his death Fuimaono has been Eastern District Governor since 1993.
During its Wednesday session, the Senate observed a moment of silence to remember their former colleague, who the Senate President Lolo Moliga called a great leader and statesman.
