A Cook Islands MP and lawyer is taking a case to court over Sunday flights to Aitutaki
The government adopted a trial plan allowing Sunday flights from Rarotonga to the island in June, despite a petition signed by 900 people on Aitutaki opposing the move.
But lawyer, Norman George, is requesting a declaratory judgment saying the Sunday flights were approved illegally.
"There's a mandatory requirement of the Air Services Act of the Cook Islands that the Minister of Civil Aviation before he can grant an air service license, that he's got to do, well, he didn't do any of it. One of the fundamental things that he didn't do was to consult the people of Aitutaki. The Minister of Civil Aviation never sat down and and had a meeting with them. Instead the Deputy Prime Minister was doing all the gymnastics."
Norman George says he is representing at least 60 percent of the people of Aitutaki.
