The Fiji Sugar Corporation says it expects a small increase in this years harvest.
The Corporation's chief executive, Deo Saran has told Fijilive they are expecting to crush 2.38 million tonnes of cane this year.
Last seasons crush was 2.32 million tonnes.
Deo Saran said the increase in crop size compared to last year could be attributed to a few factors, including healthier and greener crops.
He said most crops damaged in January's flooding had recovered while cane fields that had not recovered would need to be rehabilitated.
He said the FSC now intended to start the 2009 crushing season early in order to produce the required quantity of sugar for the EU market.
This, he said, would allow the industry to enjoy the current sugar price before a further reduction of 22 per cent, which will come into force in October this year.
