Australian journalist refused entry to Fiji as tourist

An Australian journalist has been refused entry to Fiji upon arrival as a tourist, more than two years after he worked in the country.

Steve McCully, a former editorial manager with The Fiji Times, was refused entry after arriving in Fiji for his wedding and honeymoon last Saturday.

Mr McCully flew into Nadi airport only to be prohibited from entering by immigration officials who checked him on to a flight back to Brisbane later that night.

He says the move by Fiji's interim regime has wasted the considerable time and money spent by his fiancee's family on organising a traditional Fijian wedding.

"You know, she's got the wedding dress, the wedding cake was made, the food was bought for the reception, all those things, the church was booked obviously... She's devastated naturally, and the family's quite angry. The point is, I was just an ordinary tourist. They [the interim regime], in their wisdom, don't see me as an ordinary tourist though."
