Adi Ateca Ganilau, the daughter of Fiji's former President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, has been elected as the new Chairperson of the Lau Provincial Council.
Adi Ateca, whose brother Ratu Tevita Mara fled Fiji for Tonga in May, was appointed as chair of the council in Nadi in the last hour after taking 17 votes.
Fiji Village reports that other nominees to the position, the Education Minister Filipe Bole managed to get 15 votes and the Turaga Rokosau Roko Josefa Delainauluvatu got six votes.
