Air Tahiti Nui has announced new code sharing agreements with American Airlines and Qantas which it hopes will draw more tourists to French Polynesia.

The airline says the deals will give it access to 15 additional destinations in the United States and two in Australia.

The Director of Tahiti Tourism for Australia and New Zealand, Robert Thompson, says the agreements will make more people aware of French Polynesia as a tourist destination.

"It means that the marketing powers of American Airlines within the US is going to give us benefits in terms of destinational awareness. With regard to Qantas it means that the additional code shares from Brisbane and Melbourne will make it easier to acces French Polynesia with a one stop flight from those centres which at the end of the day gives us more tourists."

Robert Thompson, says the Qantas accord follows a 40 percent increase in the number of Australian tourists travelling to French Polynesia in February compared to the same month last year.
