The Protestant Church in New Caledonia has changed its name to take into account the territory's name used by many indigenous people.

At its synod in Lifou, the church decided to call itself now the Protestant Church of Kanaky New Caledonia.

Six years ago, the church adopted the Kanak flag as the territory's flag.

The flag issue has been hotly debated and two years ago led to government falling several times.
