Vanuatu chiefs support death penalty call

Vanuatu's Chairman of the National Council of Chiefs, Seni Mao Tirsupe, says he supports the call made by former Minister of Justice, Silas Yatan, for the government to consider introducing the death penalty.

Chief Tirsupe has told the Daily Post Newspaper that he supports a death penalty law but is also calling on the government to find the solution to end brutal killings and murders of innocent men, women and babies.

This follows the axing to death of a man from Ambae and the recent killings of a pregnant woman and a 21-year old woman by their partners.

The chief also says relevant penalties must be passed by parliament for young people dealing in illegal drugs.
