Electoral Commission member confident body will be 'neutral'

A member of Fiji's newly-appointed Electoral Commission, Father David Arms, says he is confident the commission will be neutral and independent.

The government has announced a seven member commission, headed by former president of the Fiji Law Society Chen Bunn Young, to supervise the elections promised for September.

The supervisor of elections is yet to be announced.

Father Arms, who was also a member of the former Electoral Commission set up in 2007, says it is an honour to be appointed again.

He expects elections to go ahead this year, as planned.

"A lot of preparations have already been made and things are well-advanced already. Even though there's a lot of things yet to be done, I'm quite confident we just have get down to it and try to make sure these run as well as possible. "

Father David Arms says he expects to meet with the other members of the commission this week.
