The incumbent president of the autonomous Papua New Guinea region of Bougainville, John Momis, has established a lead of more than 30,000 votes after last month's election.
Mr Momis on Thursday morning had nearly 49,000 votes with the former Bougainville Revolutionary Army leader, Ishmael Toroama, now in second place, ahead of his colleague Sam Kauona.
Mr Toroama has just over 16,000 votes so far.
Just six of the 40 seats in the region are yet to be declared.
