The Niue government has revealed plans to cut the country's dependence on fuel imports and have the island using 80 percent renewal energy by 2025.

The government has released the Niue Strategic Energy Road Map which shows that currently 98 percent of the island's electricity is diesel generated.
Fuel imports on Niue constitute more than 15 percent of the country's GDP.
Most of the remainder is generated by solar power.
Niue hopes to develop more solar and wind power.
The Road Map aims to develop an efficient system that delivers affordable energy that is environmentally sustainable.
Niue is the sixth Pacific nation to finalise a national energy roadmap, which has been done with technical help from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community.
The other nations are Tonga, the Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa and Nauru.
