A new state of the art weather measuring system that will provide vital information across the southwest Pacific has been opened in Niue.
The tidal gauge and positioning infrastructure will provide critical weather and sea level information.
The instruments will measure changes in sea level and can detect land movement to deliver information critical to managing the ocean environment.
The Niue Meteorological Service's Sionetasi Pulehetoa says the instruments will allow monthly tidal predictions, which will help maritime safety, fishing and tourism operations, and contribute to systems like the Pacific tsunami warning system.
The Australia funded scheme was officially opened yesterday.
