Papua New Guinea has accused Fiji of ignoring the Melanesian Free Trade Agreement and is threatening to adopt retaliatory action.
PNG's trade minister Richard Maru said he had written to his Fiji counterpart to ask for clarification on the reasons for restricting the entry of PNG goods into Fiji.
The minister had earlier raised concerns over Fiji's refusal to allow imports of Ox & Palm, Trukai Rice and other Papua New Guinea products from entering Fiji.
Mr Maru said Fiji's continued disrespect for the trading relationship with PNG and its arrogance over many years leave it with no other option but to take retaliatory action against its Melanesian brothers.
He said PNG's next step would be to not allow the entry of Fiji poultry products into PNG.
Mr Maru said Fiji could take appropriate action now to alleviate the problem, but could not sit back and hope this problem would simply go away.
