The Solomon Islands government has announced plans to incorporate traditional ways of governing into the national system of government.
The Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare made the announcement in Auki during provincial celebrations in Malaita.
Mr Sogavare said this policy would be developed through the Ministry of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace and may mean the ministry will take a different path in its work to consolidate the national peace process.
Mr Sogavare said traditional forms of governance could play a significant role in resolving issues over land that has been identified for development.
The proposals to incorporate traditional approaches to governance come as the country moves closer to implementing a federal system of government.
