Victoria University in Wellington is to confer an honorary doctorate on the distinguished Samoan, Tuiloma Neroni Slade.
Mr Slade, who graduated from the university with a law degree in 1968, later became a diplomat in Samoa and headed the Pacific Islands Forum secretariat.
Victoria University Chancellor Sir Neville Jordan said Mr Slade is a person of great dignity and distinction, admired and respected throughout the world for his pioneering work in new fields of law and his outstanding service in the Pacific.
