Sport: Nerves before PNG makes football history

11:34 am on 12 November 2016

On Sunday history will be made when the FIFA Under 20 Women's World World Cup kicks off in Papua New Guinea.

It's the first time a Pacific Island nation has hosted such a tournament and the first time PNG have competed in a world cup.

PNG will take on football giant Brazil in their opening match tomorrow.

Coach Lisa Cole said her players have nerves but it is a positive.

"I think there's a lot of nervousness still with the players because this is the biggest event they've ever played in and they want to do well but it's turned positive."

"If you've asked me earlier in the week I would call them more scared than nervous - now there's a good nervousness, excitement about getting out on the field and playing," she said.
