The American Samoa Governor Lolo Moliga says the government needs to help find work for staff when Samoa Tuna Processors closes its canning operations.
The governor told directors at his first meeting with the cabinet after being re elected that about 900 employees will lose their jobs on December 11th.
He has set up a committee to work on an application to the federal government for assistance for those staff who are affected.
The governor is urging the application for federal assistance be completed as soon as possible.
After the Samoa Packing cannery closed in 2009, the local govenrment was successful in securing grants of more than $US24 million to train people for new jobs.
