Tonga Police say the number of charges laid for attempted suicide in the country is rising.
Chief Superintendent Tevita Vailea said there was a need for more mental health support in Tonga and that the community must be made aware of the suicidal attitudes that exist.
Early this week an 18 year old male was charged with attempted suicide after the mother reported the incident to police.
Under the Criminal Offences Act, convictions for attempted suicide can be punishable with up to three years imprisonment.
Mr Vailea said the rising number of suicide attempts must not be ignored.
"There is a need. And I am talking about a holistic approach from every stakeholder and the community too," he said.
"There are various factors that contribute to this problem And I think there's no difference from other countries in the world."
