A firefighters strike in French Polynesia, now in its fourth day, has prompted Air Tahiti to cancel most internal flights for today.

The domestic carrier can only assure services between Tahiti, Raiatea, Bora Bora and ist flight to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.

All other destinations are cut off.

International flights to and from Tahiti have largely been maintained but with altered flight schedules.

The strike was called earlier this week because depending on the airport, some firefighters are employed by the state and others by a private company.

Camp beds were set up at Tahiti's airport to accommodate travellers whose flights were disrupted.
