A helicopter has been called in to help New Caledonian firefighters control a bushfire in the north.

The fire near Koumac has destroyed more than 300 hectares of vegetation since it broke out in the mountainous area on Sunday.

On Wednesday, the size of the blaze prompted the president to send a civil security team with a high capacity firetruck to the area.

Officials said for the time being the fire posed no threat to any settlements, but they warned that this could change depending on the wind.

Another fire near Poya had been extinguished.

There are warnings of impending drought in the area of Voh, Kone and Pouembout in the far north due to low rainfall during the cooler season which is about to end.
