The co-founder of the civil society group Kiribati Citizens Against Corruption said the acting chief executive of the state owned Kiribati Oil Company has been seen crashing his company car.
Ngatau Neneia said the vehicle veered off the road and into a street lamp before coming to rest in a bundle of trees.
He said witnesses saw the executive behind the wheel at the time of the accident and that there were unconfirmed reports the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
No injuries were reported but Ngatau said senior officials should be made to account for damaging public properties.
