Police in New Caledonia have appealed to the public for information after a police vehicle was shot at near La Foa.
Reports say a police patrol was following a car when one of its passengers opened a window, pulled out a rifle and fired at the police car, hitting its front.
Nobody was injured.
The car with the gunman was then driven into the bush near Kouaoua where it was set alight, destroying any possible fingerprints.
The fire allowed the car's occupants to escape and required firefighters to intervene.
This is the latest attack on police in New Caledonia. Since October last year, 20 police officers have suffered gunshot wounds - the highest in any part of France.
