A newly formed French Polynesian political party has called for the election to be postponed because of irregularities in the registration process.

The Our Movement grouping said several of its candidates were obstructed by local officials when they tried to complete their documentation needed to stand.

Our Movement's leader Tevai Haumani conceded the party failed to meet last week's registration deadline but said some mayors and officials had made it impossible to comply because they refused to certify documents.

Mr Haumani has written to the French President Emmanuel Macron asking for the election to be delayed because the liberty of the candidates had not been respected.

He has also addressed the French High Commissioner who is responsible for the election.

The administrative court has rejected his appeal but said he should seek redress in the criminal court system if he wanted to pursue the matter.
