Voters in Wallis and Futuna have elected Sylvain Brial as their new member of the French National Assembly.

Preliminary results show he won 51.6 percent of the votes, defeating the incumbent Napole Polutele.

The election was called two months ago after the constitutional court in Paris had found that 21 proxy votes cast for Mr Polutele were irregular, which deprived him of his slim majority.

Mr Polutele retained his seat in June, but his victory was challenged by Mr Brial.

The French National Assembly election in Wallis and Futuna in 2012 was also annulled because the winner David Verge produced flawed campaign accounts, triggering a fresh election which was won by Mr Polutele.

Mr Verge was subsequently banned from holding public office for one year, but was later elected as the new president
